A perfect place to take the little ones and introduce them to singletrack. Yep, that's a dog's head you see behind mine. My dog doesn't care for running pavement( a true mtb dog in the making) but he loves dirt<br />

<br />
Montezuma's Revenge<br />
<br />
Maybe it was a lack of serious riding this summer. Maybe it was my nutrition that day. I knew my plans were ambitious but it was a route I had been planning for two years. A big loop from Keystone up through Montezuma to the Continental Divide across to Georgia Pass and taking the Colorado Trail back to Keystone via Red Trail and The Aqueduct Trail.<br />
<br />
This route knocked me down and turned my head into a bowl full of Jelly and once I reached the Colorado Trail I was done but it was still fun.....<br />

It started wet and with Moose. Moose!<br />

I could go into a bunch of boring meaningless drivel but these days for me, pictures speak louder then words. This may be split up into a multipart series.....<br />
<br />
Father's Day. My wife helped me set up a shuttle of the Shingle Mill Trail in Buffalo Creek. Being the all around awesome Dad that I am, I can even turn an eight mile ride in an Epic for my girls with lightening, views and toad sized rain drops falling just as we reached the truck.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/9067958744/" title="P1100441 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="P1100441" height="414" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5506/9067958744_a9898d2d6e_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />

<br />

<br />
Jones Pass on July 4th has become a tradition. Crossing the Snow Cornice has always been dicey and seeing "Slow" falling/ sliding forty feet just about did me in even though he survived with a nervous laugh and nary a scratch.<br />
<br />
Now you see him<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/9218469983/" title="P1100487 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="P1100487" height="404" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3715/9218469983_f88bde3ff6_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Now you don't<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/9218469315/" title="P1100489 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="P1100489" height="459" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5534/9218469315_a221d43331_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Trying again<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/9218468667/" title="P1100490 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="P1100490" height="480" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2828/9218468667_ce579afcc7_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
and back in the game<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/9218468057/" title="P1100491 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="P1100491" height="640" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3798/9218468057_92cce99166_z.jpg" width="480" /></a><br />
<br />
and then Boom...12,500 ft and we're riding the top of the world<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/9221240296/" title="P1100496 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="P1100496" height="480" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2849/9221240296_0bdf7d10f4_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />

<br />
to the high point of the day 13,215 ft where we enjoyed some shrooms<br />
<br />

Not really enough to make a Fat Bike necessary but who says you need snow to make a Fat Bike Fun? I had a light day on Thursday so I called Bsoft and we headed to Lair of the Bear for a quick lunch snow ride. Fat> Snow> Epic Fun!!!<br />

<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/8444106206/" title="P1090891 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="P1090891" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8192/8444106206_f5b63b7dca_z.jpg" width="480" /></a><br />

<br />
It began with some riding of pavement<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/8437494128/" title="P1090775 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="P1090775" height="480" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8362/8437494128_84d710d9b8_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
But it quickly gave way to fresh snow and wheelies..<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/8436418043/" title="P1090783 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="P1090783" height="480" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8084/8436418043_b47cecc87a_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Then the mining relics came and past<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/8436418461/" title="P1090791 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="P1090791" height="480" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8366/8436418461_9d9b347468_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Onward and upward...somewhere above 10,000 ft<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/8436419263/" title="P1090793 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="P1090793" height="351" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8055/8436419263_ddba9fc525_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
some contouring before the downhill begins<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/8436419647/" title="P1090794 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="P1090794" height="348" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8361/8436419647_62ef3a770b_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Times getting near, I have to pick up my kids from school in an hour or so. 200 yards of post-hole a bike...made me question but then we started finding the goods again<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/8436420199/" title="P1090801 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="P1090801" height="480" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8330/8436420199_b5ed5a8c21_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
and again<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/8437497938/" title="P1090802 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="P1090802" height="480" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8352/8437497938_244baaa423_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
and again<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/8436415845/" title="P1090803 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="P1090803" height="363" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8186/8436415845_a801faf27a_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
till the world became bliss all around<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/8436416833/" title="P1090809 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="P1090809" height="413" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8234/8436416833_fc032e6364_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
and we found our own secret Nirvana<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/8437499626/" title="P1090810 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="P1090810" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8513/8437499626_d4427bcfeb_z.jpg" width="475" /></a><br />
<br />
and even discovered the "Turn of Doom" is ridable by Fat Bike<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/8436417591/" title="P1090812 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="P1090812" height="386" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8043/8436417591_09cb092ee1_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />

<br />
<br />
What we discovered yesterday was a fresh blanket of 3-6 inches and fresh tracks to made<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/8421455689/" title="P1090683 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="P1090683" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8330/8421455689_6b6b111194_z.jpg" width="480" /></a><br />

My last ride before I stopped was somewhere around November 25th.<br />
My fork started leaking negative air pressure, DU bushings in the rear shock were shot<br />
I bought a house.
The sewer line collapsed. I had to pay mucho dollars to have it repaired...blah...blah...blah..<br />
<br />
Fast forward to December 30th.
The local Annual Beerd Belly Ride was on January 1st and I wanted in. So I rented a Salsa Beargrease..a fat bike and it was tons of fun...
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/8332237682/" title="P1090484 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="P1090484" height="389" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8215/8332237682_cf70c605ea_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
So if you don't understand Fat Bikes...here's a quick idea of it..
Fat bikes have specially made frames and forks to run 3.7 inch wide tires or larger. These tires are generally held by rims in the 47mm-100mm width but 65mm and wider are generally the rule of thumb for winter riding.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/8402323278/" title="beerd belly 4 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="beerd belly 4" height="480" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8088/8402323278_1d1704f9c5_z.jpg" width="640" /></a> <br />
<br />
What's the point? Well those wider tires do something special. Most normal mountain bike tires run anywhere from 20psi to 35psi. I usually run 22-25 psi myself. Those huge fat tires on a fat bike though. Well on dirt they can run 9-11psi comfortably for my weight. These huge tires have so much volume that they act like a sort of suspension in themselves. But the real idea behind these tires is snow. Drop the air pressure to say 4-6 psi and these tires flatten and widen their footprint and snow that would be difficult on a normal mountain bike becomes easily doable on the Fat bike.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/8401234513/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Beerd Belly 1 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="Beerd Belly 1" height="394" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8047/8401234513_7a55c1661a_z.jpg" width="640" /></a>The Fat Bike and its tires do have their limitations though. Riding uphill or even flat through deep powder is near impossible but get the right conditions or even a powdery downhill, they are bliss. Perfect for whats needed to continue riding in the Front Range and beyond of Colorado.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/8402323220/" title="beerd belly 5 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="beerd belly 5" height="480" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8358/8402323220_80ff32f7ba_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
So my wife saw how much fun I had on the fat bike and said," Lets see what we can do about getting you one." I though she was crazy at 1st. We had just spent mucho dollars on a new home and on a new sewer line. But we have a rule around here that we don't spend received christmas money on bills. I found a 2011 Salsa Mukluk frame and fork cheap at Treefortbikes.com and that bought that. But I still needed parts. I had a few odds n ends but still needed wheels, tires, Fatbike specific crankset since these run a 100mm wide bottom bracket with a specific chainline, in my case 67.5mm for my Salsa Mukluk.<br />
<br />
To fund this I'm selling my Road Bike which is a Salsa Podio, full Dura Ace 10 speed and all kinds of Goodies. If your interested email me at: jeremyarnold33 at gmail dot com. I'm looking for $1600 but am willing to negotiate a bit.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/8356386376/" title="Road Bike02 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img alt="Road Bike02" height="449" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8356/8356386376_16a0ac5216_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I talked to Golden Bike Shop which used to be the regular shop but in my humble opinion as well as many that I've talked to, is that Golden's Rep as a shop has gone down since their General Manager Adam left them for Rocky Mountain Bicycles. Their attitude about building wheels and buying parts from them left me feel wanting so my buddy Greg turned me onto Pedal of Littleton.<br />
<br />
The owners of Pedal of Littleton just moved to town from Georgia about a year ago and the head honcho, Andy has owned a Surly Pugsley (fat bike) since they came out. They are super excited about Fat Bikes and have tons of stock. I got them to build my wheels, and then ordered everything I needed from them.<br />
<br />
So here it is...In it's glory and all done.<br />

It's 1st voyage was dry dirt during the local night ride. It was an awesome experience but this bike was built with snow in mind and snow it had.<br />
<br />
I talked my buddy Torkima into riding Georgetown. I had no idea what the snow conditions were but I was hoping for something on the ground that was rideable. <br />
<br />
We found what we were looking for and more...<br />

Just before the <a href="http://forums.mtbr.com/colorado-front-range/2nd-annual-goats-fall-tour-816368.html">Goat's Fall Tour</a> last weekend I hit Meadow Mtn and Son of Middle Creek in a cold, light drizzle on that Thursday

Last Wednesday it was Fantastic Lenawee..I got to chase Snow Clouds at 12,500 ft and had a rippin Fast descent down Lenawee into the small village of Montezuma. I finished just as it was getting dusk and I was ready to strap on my lights and start the 5 mile or so climb up US6 when I heard someone calling my name in the distance,
"Goat....Goat...Goat"
Why its Full Trucker calling my name with a beer in hand and offers of a shuttle.
I thought it'd be rude to turn him down. =)

Then on Saturday a weather front was settled in over the Denver Metro area. 30 degrees or so and a freezing rain was dropping. That's ok though because I went to Vail, about 60 miles or so to the west and found blue skies and highs in the 50's. Perfect!
What I discovered there was Nirvana

Looks like my big ol fall loop is becoming a tradition. I didn't do as well this year as I did last but I finished and had a small group of happy survivors who were all delirious about the amount of fantastic singletrack. <a href="http://forums.mtbr.com/colorado-front-range/2nd-annual-goats-fall-tour-816368.html">For a recap, check out the MTBR Thread. </a>The Evil MGE!http://www.blogger.com/profile/06189933903211693479noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1305542265922356006.post-75110479621885731502012-09-24T23:23:00.001-06:002012-09-24T23:23:49.259-06:00Scarp's Ridge Super LoopIt's my favorite time of the year. Fall. The riding temperature is just right, a crisp edge to the air that feels cleansing. The Aspens and the high country foliage are turning shades of deep gold, reds, and oranges.
So I took advantage of a quick weekend getaway at Crested Butte and what I rode astounded and mesmerized me as the Butte usually does. <a href="http://forums.mtbr.com/colorado-front-range/scarp-ridge-super-loop-815013.html">Check out all the photos and words on MTBR</a>

No downhilling, technical, or other skills that would help one enjoy the awesomeness of such a spectacular downhill<br /><br />C. Hates hike a bikes. On Monarch Pass exists the infamous Monarch Crest Trail. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7674653754/" title="P1080522 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8282/7674653754_443da2b9fd_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="P1080522"></a><br /><br />Most folks just do a route of Monarch Crest> The Colorado Trail> Silver Creek > Rainbow Trail....<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7674651456/" title="P1080524 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8425/7674651456_78a8f3fc37_z.jpg" width="640" height="297" alt="P1080524"></a><br /><br />Well ya know how I like to take a route and make it my own. We ended up doing all of the above but we also added in Starvation Creek and Poncho Creek. Taking a 30ish mile route about 3,000 ft of climbing and making it almost 50 miles with over 5,000 ft in climbing.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7674649514/" title="P1080527 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8024/7674649514_d0a1e823c2_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="P1080527"></a><br /><br />Who would of think of such Shenanigans but the crew was game and the descent down Starvation Creek made the 2,000 ft climb back up Poncho Pass bearable. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7674646456/" title="P1080529 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8002/7674646456_e83c54c02d_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="P1080529"></a><br /><br /><br />Fav quote of the day: "I never knew circus wheels could go so fast" Dee Tidwell,Yeti's Personal Trainer when speaking of my 29er going downhill<br /><br />Dee was still faster then me on his SB66...both climbing and descending....wicked fast that dude is<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7674640074/" title="P1080533 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7106/7674640074_ae7966516d_z.jpg" width="474" height="640" alt="P1080533"></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7674637530/" title="P1080535 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7252/7674637530_9bd1f3e5e1_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="P1080535"></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7674628636/" title="P1080541 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7137/7674628636_6331aea74c_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="P1080541"></a><br /><br />and the Green Chile Beer at <a href="http://amicassalida.com/">Amica's</a> afterwards...so damn goodThe Evil MGE!http://www.blogger.com/profile/06189933903211693479noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1305542265922356006.post-73259586721455922932012-07-09T22:32:00.003-06:002012-07-24T21:57:05.926-06:00Searle and Kokomo Passes<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7540905806/" title="P1080378 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8290/7540905806_aafa2c1556_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="P1080378"></a><br /><br />Saturday I headed up to the High Country for a spin with Luis and <a href="http://ourlifeontwowheels.blogspot.com/">Kelly Klett</a>. Kelly was in town from Raliegh, NC and turned out to be a bad ass singlespeeder, not only smoking me and Luis on the climbs but I even gave up the descent to let him rock it all out.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7540902928/" title="P1080381 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8028/7540902928_10cedf558d_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="P1080381"></a><br /><br />Our drive up to Copper was a bit ominous. Thick clouds swirled in the sky and the rain drops fell thicker and thicker as we neared the Continental Divide. When I broke my hand back in May it had been raining and maybe I let this set me up for a stupid mistake later in the day. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7540893462/" title="P1080389 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8009/7540893462_a841983a42_z.jpg" width="640" height="326" alt="P1080389"></a><br /><br />Right as we arrived in Copper, the rain stopped and we had awesome east coasty like rain forest conditions for the rest of the day. As we climbed about two or three miles out of Copper we ran into a fella from Littleton attempting the CT from Denver to Durango. It was right after saying out pleasantries and, "see ya at the top" when I clipped a pedal on a rock, flipped over the bars and my right thigh landed on a tombstone shaped rock. The pain was an intense fire that had me withering on the ground. This has not been my year on the bike as I count this as no less then a dozen crashes. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7540889748/" title="P1080392 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8424/7540889748_9af09b147b_z.jpg" width="640" height="350" alt="P1080392"></a><br /><br />Luis and Kelly thought I had either broken my leg or the Littleton CT attempter was a raging maniac who was chopping me to pieces as my moans and screams of pain cut through the silence of the morning air. After about 10 minutes I was able to sit up and swallow about 800 mg of Vitamin I. Both asked if I wanted to bail which I declined but the rest of the day's ride would be plagued by that leg trying to give me a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charley_horse">Charley Horse</a> which just seemed to suck some of the will to ride from me. In the end, I just settled into a slow pace and kept it cool and enjoyed the Alpine singletrack as it should be. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7540879978/" title="P1080404 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7272/7540879978_c6e5c7b177_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="P1080404"></a><br /><br />looking down the Camp Hale side of Kokomo Pass(12,022 ft). I had debated all day whether to do a loop with included Ptarmigan Pass but that was 60% singletrack, 20% dirtroad, and 20% paved bike path. We decided after seeing this that we would be happy with a 100% singletrack out n back even if it did cut ten miles off the ride.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7540875972/" title="P1080408 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8007/7540875972_b4571936cf_z.jpg" width="640" height="288" alt="P1080408"></a><br />somewhere between Searle and Kokomo Passes<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7540870804/" title="P1080413 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8145/7540870804_29c4bbbf8e_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="P1080413"></a><br />Kelly with Searle Pass in the Background<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7540867652/" title="P1080421 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8164/7540867652_63f3827c08_z.jpg" width="640" height="443" alt="P1080421"></a>The Evil MGE!http://www.blogger.com/profile/06189933903211693479noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1305542265922356006.post-65880100496180504712012-07-06T06:45:00.002-06:002012-07-06T07:07:07.319-06:00Dividing Waters on Independece DaySometimes, you have to make things work.<br /><br />waking up at 3:30am to get them all accomplished is sometimes necessary and worth it.<br /><br />My original plan was to get up early and ride Three Sisters and go celebrate the forth later with family and friends. It was Zen for the rest of the weekend.<br /><br />At camp and how I always want to see the girls look...happy and wild<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7435431858/" title="P1080131 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8027/7435431858_2e58833172_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="P1080131"></a><br /><br />The next day we hiked. 4 miles in total, out n back. Starting a little over 11,000 ft. Ending a little over 12,000 ft. I'm having to use a modified wrist guard to support my palm and wrist and while uncomfortable, it works and keeps the hand supported enough that I can stand to ride without a cast.<br /><br />Yesterday the High Country was calling and I headed to Kenosha Pass to see for myself that it was completely clear to Georgia Pass. It was and even Jefferson Creek is rocking with only a 20' snow drift and 6 downed trees.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7390622806/" title="Top of Georgia Pass by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7229/7390622806_8fa0a3ccd4_z.jpg" alt="Top of Georgia Pass" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7390619090/" title="Looking towards Breck from Georgia Pass by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7244/7390619090_49f6f2f95d_z.jpg" alt="Looking towards Breck from Georgia Pass" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><br />This morning I got out to White Ranch before most of you were crawling out of bed. That ball of fire in the sky was stoking even at 6am and it was awesome to be out. This is not the Goat's year as I took another hard crash getting frisky on Rawhide...Knocked the breath out of me, skinned up the right arm, leg, and hip and a nice rotor burn to the left arm when the bike landed on me. The hand fared well though and I decided to take it a little easier on the descents after that.....Weeee!!!<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7390614720/" title="Top of White Ranch by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8016/7390614720_3f28a963c3_z.jpg" alt="Top of White Ranch" height="480" width="640" /></a>The Evil MGE!http://www.blogger.com/profile/06189933903211693479noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1305542265922356006.post-67395317572016379022012-06-15T18:27:00.004-06:002012-06-17T13:21:07.737-06:00High CountryIts been almost one month since I've broken my hand. Though the cast is off and I'm back to work and riding, its been an emotional rollercoaster. Work forced short term disability, riding has been a chore and the smell of that cast from exercising with it on had just about had me driven into seclusion.<br /><br />From Georgetown<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7333188038/" title="P1080002 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7217/7333188038_07ec5b1d05_z.jpg" alt="P1080002" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7333186374/" title="P1080003 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7078/7333186374_4ca6913db2_z.jpg" alt="P1080003" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><br />to Keystone and beyond<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7164973845/" title="P1080035 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7087/7164973845_4e1c7a6abe_z.jpg" alt="P1080035" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7356323746/" title="P1080050 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7236/7356323746_97d4e23e8d_z.jpg" alt="P1080050" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><br />One of the last rides where I had to wear a magical gauntlet<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7356330850/" title="7356268982_cdfc2be122_b by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8143/7356330850_5396ecef6b_z.jpg" alt="7356268982_cdfc2be122_b" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><br />Last night I got to join the T.I.T.S crew for the 1st time in that month. I had no idea how the hand would fare as I had tried a road ride the day before and the newly uncasted hand hated every bump on the road. I modified a wrist guard and it worked well. While my hand was uncomfortable, it handled the ride and let me know its ready for more high country this weekend. Looks like other then work, this summer isn't gonna be too bad after all.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7356330156/" title="P1080062 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7212/7356330156_c91993071b_z.jpg" alt="P1080062" height="480" width="640" /></a>The Evil MGE!http://www.blogger.com/profile/06189933903211693479noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1305542265922356006.post-83684288601492834902012-05-28T22:05:00.002-06:002012-05-28T22:09:52.560-06:00Sisters at SistersI took Ayla and Sophie to Three Sisters Open Space today. I had no idea how my hand would respond but it did fairly well even doing some standing climbing pulling Sophie w/ the Trail a Bike on the Single-speed. Ayla was riding well even hitting some smallish waterbar drops of 8-10 inches. I've had her on some relatively easy trails such as Bear Creek Lake Park and the Stonehouse Trails in Lakewood. She's been asking me for a real mountain bike for the past year and finally I found a 2008-2009 model Scott Jr Scale 20 on the local Craigslist. It was in descent shape and the price low enough that I could be happy investing some coin to make it the bike she and I wanted,<br /><br />The original bike<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/6946371048/" title="The Original Bike by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7122/6946371048_38b237af99_z.jpg" alt="The Original Bike" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><br />Sanded and stripped<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7092440965/" title="stripped bare by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7211/7092440965_98f8be709b_z.jpg" alt="stripped bare" height="480" width="640" /></a><br /><br />Rattle can painted with a fade ...Aqua to Metallic Blue...10 coats of clear and 3 coats of Turtle Wax Ice<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7004430388/" title="P1070649 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8016/7004430388_9a46cd644e_z.jpg" alt="P1070649" height="640" width="421" /></a><br /><br />Downtube<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7150521445/" title="P1070650 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8017/7150521445_26261961dc_z.jpg" alt="P1070650" height="640" width="419" /></a><br /><br />Toptube<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7150521649/" title="P1070651 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7253/7150521649_528510f55a_z.jpg" alt="P1070651" height="640" width="414" /></a><br /><br />Seattube/ toptube junction<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7150521903/" title="P1070652 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8003/7150521903_13b45b8ef4_z.jpg" alt="P1070652" height="531" width="640" /></a><br /><br />Headtube<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7150522977/" title="P1070654 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5346/7150522977_ee653a4d3a_z.jpg" alt="P1070654" height="640" width="470" /></a><br /><br />The Fork with asymmetrical two tone<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7004433756/" title="P1070660 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7115/7004433756_6469698650_z.jpg" alt="P1070660" height="640" width="398" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7150523467/" title="P1070658 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8011/7150523467_70064ae3f3_z.jpg" alt="P1070658" height="640" width="383" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7004433268/" title="P1070659 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8146/7004433268_ec233ca3f0_z.jpg" alt="P1070659" height="640" width="416" /></a><br /><br />One of the issues I had with the Scott Scale Jr 20 is the 42x34 chainrings that are basically press-fitted on the crankset. I live in Colorado and we have a few small hills here and there and want a little easier gear for my girl to push.<br /><br />I took her original cranks and cut off the large chainring and cut the 34 tooth chain ring leaving a "spider". I then measured and drilled out 104 bcd bolt spacing on the "spider" and mounted a 32 tooth Surly ring and a bash-guard I had laying in the parts bin.<br /><br />The original crank and rings<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7265927964/" title="P1070798 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7087/7265927964_c2ed36517c_z.jpg" alt="P1070798" height="443" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/goatshell/7265927674/" title="P1070800 by Goat in a Turtle Shell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7095/7265927674_fef086b08e_z.jpg" alt="P1070800" height="454" width="640" /></a><br /><br />modified crank...the original bolts that held the inner ring on were stripped and seized. I drilled them out and used some stainless bolts and nylon locking nuts to reinstall the cut "spider". The nuts clear the frame by about 3 mm which works for the size of the holes, 3/8's in diameter but add some weight.
